Playground canopies for schools
A playground canopy is a covered outdoor structure over a school play area, giving all-weather cover so play, PE and break-times carry on in rain or strong sun. It is the most-asked-for school canopy, turning a weather-dependent yard into space that works every day.

What is a playground canopy?
A playground canopy is a covered outdoor structure over a school play area — a galvanised, powder-coated steel frame carrying a UV-filtering polycarbonate roof — that gives all-weather cover so play, PE and break-times carry on in rain or strong sun. It is the most-asked-for of the school canopies we design, make and install.
A playground canopy turns a weather-dependent yard into space that works every day: children play outside in the wet, classes take lessons under cover, and the roof filters the large majority of UV so the area stays sun-safe in summer. The frame is engineered to the site and finished in any RAL or school colour, free-standing out in the playground or wall-mounted to the building.
- Frame: galvanised, powder-coated steel, engineered to the site.
- Roof: impact-resistant polycarbonate that filters the large majority of UV.
- Mounting: free-standing or wall-mounted, to suit the space.
What are the benefits of a playground canopy for a school?
A playground canopy gives a school more usable outdoor space by making it weatherproof: play and PE continue through rain, break-times decompress instead of crowding indoors, and a shaded area protects children from strong summer UV. The gain is measured in days of usable outdoor space across the year, not in fair weather alone.
- Play in any weather: break, lunch and free play carry on through rain and strong sun.
- PE and sport: a covered area keeps lessons on when the field or hall is out.
- Outdoor learning: a base for an outdoor classroom and forest-school sessions.
- Sun safety: a polycarbonate roof filters the large majority of UV over the play area.
- Early years: free-flow cover for an EYFS garden linking indoors to out.
Which frame and roof — steel, curved or timber?
A playground canopy is built in the frame and roof that suit the site: powder-coated steel is the workhorse for the widest maintenance-free spans, a curved roof lifts a frontage and self-drains across an arch, and glulam timber gives a natural look for early-years and forest-school settings. All three carry the same polycarbonate roof; the choice is span, look and setting.
| Steel | Curved-roof | Timber | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roof line | Mono-pitch, drains one side | Arched, self-draining | Mono-pitch or arched |
| Look | Clean, understated | Premium frontage | Natural, warm |
| Best for | Main playgrounds | Entrances, flagship areas | EYFS, forest school, parks |
| Upkeep | Near maintenance-free | Near maintenance-free | Occasional re-treatment |
| Page | Steel canopies | Curved-roof canopies | Timber canopies |
Every option is roofed in the same UV-filtering polycarbonate and engineered to the site; the decision is span, look and setting, not strength.
Free-standing or wall-mounted?
A playground canopy can be free-standing, on its own columns out in the playground, or wall-mounted (lean-to), fixed to the building so the covered area has no front columns. Free-standing goes anywhere with a base; wall-mounted suits cover tight to the doors or along a frontage. The full comparison is set out on our free-standing and lean-to canopies page.
How much does a playground canopy cost?
A playground canopy is quoted to your project rather than sold at a list price, because the cost is driven by the covered area and clear span, the frame and roof specification, the ground conditions and the fixing method. We survey the site, then return a design, a specification and a firm price with no obligation.
The biggest cost movers are the footprint and span (more steel and bigger foundations), the roof glazing, ground conditions and access, and any powder-coat colour or extras such as guttering, downpipes and lighting. A curved roof or a timber frame will price differently again from the standard steel canopy, which we set out clearly in the quote.
What safety and standards apply to a playground canopy?
A playground canopy structure is engineered to the structural Eurocodes — BS EN 1991 for wind and snow loads, BS EN 1993 for the steelwork — and installed under CDM 2015, with a polycarbonate roof that is impact-resistant and filters the large majority of UV for sun safety. The structural design and load calculations are provided for sign-off.
Note that BS EN 1176 governs the play equipment and impact surfacing a canopy shelters, not the canopy structure itself, so we never claim the canopy “complies with BS EN 1176”. Frame and roof warranties are confirmed on the specification, and our installers are DBS-checked for work on a live school site.

Playground canopies questions
How much does a playground canopy cost?
It depends on the size, the frame and roof type and the site, so we price each one at survey rather than quote a headline figure. Tell us the area and the setting and we return a design, a specification and a firm price with no obligation.
Does a playground canopy need planning permission?
Some do and some do not — it depends on the size, the position and whether the school is in a conservation area or listed. We advise on the likely position at survey and can support a planning application where one is needed.
